Run-through of concept

Transformcity provides cities and real estate companies with strategic advice, training and support for their urban transformation processes.

The client approached us to 'Design for local residents to engage with their locality'.

Location

The pilot scheme would initially start in Amstel3, Amsterdam.

Target Audience

  • Existing and new local residents.

  • Small business owners.

  • People commuting to the area.

Solution/Process

Field Research

Amstel 3 Key Information:

  • 26000 daily workers.

  • The only real residential area right now it a student campus called Blue-Gray.

  • Until 2027 5000 apartments will be built in the area.

After interviewing local residents, business owners and commuters we identified the following problem areas:

  • Awareness of community plans and developments.

  • Tools or strategies for keeping track of community events.

  • Lack of volunteer opportunities or ways to contribute to local community.

  • Tools or strategies for communicating with local residents and businesses.

  • Lack of culture, community events and public gathering spaces.

'How can we help motivate and incentivise locals to get involved with local community projects’

User Research

User Scenarios

Arnaud has recently moved to Amstel3 from Dublin for his new job and for cheaper rent. He is thrilled to be within walking distance from his new job.

Arnaud fells there is a lack of cultural diversity and local community events in Amstel III and would like to make new friends. He wishes that there was a tool to help locate and choose community events and initiatives that she could be a part of.

Motivation

  • Wants to meet new people in the area.

Goals

  • Would like to get to know more local people.

  • Would like to save money.

Pain Points

  • Spends his free time outside of Amstel3

  • Is curerntly unaware of local events in his neighbourhood.

“I don't feel there is much going on in my area”

User Research

Affinity Diagramming

First we began identifying and clustering the main areas from our field research.

Which was then sorted and ranked into three distinct problem areas:

1. Social Cohesion

2. Corporate Dominance

3. Lack of Cultural Infrastructure

User Research

User Journey Mapping

In this next stage, we took the affinity clustering and organized into two empathy maps framed by Says, Thinks, Does, Feels.

We identified two very different user types for the same area and chose to focus on a local person living in Amstel III.

Categorizing data into actions and emotions helped to create user journey maps.

A/B User Testing

We conducted user testing on different incentivisation methods such as leaderboard, badges and visual representations of hours contributed.

  • Can we incentivize people to volunteer in their local communities? What type of incentives?

  • Do incentives have to be real rewards?

  • How can we better connect businesses with skilled volunteers?

  • Can gamification be used to incentivize volunteer work?

  • What other incentives might be used?

“I don’t like that I care about rankings, but I am motivated by leaderboards. I am a competitive person.”

“The badges give me a sense of reward.”

“I love competition, so I definitely want to see how I rank compared to others.”
